MapInfo Discovery™ is an enterprise browser-driven map catalog and map viewer application. It functions as an extension to MapInfo Professional®. The product is ideal for sharing maps within and between departments. Now colleagues, executives and constituents can easily access interactive maps showing the results of your analysis. It’s easy-to-use, requires no programming or Internet skills, and - most importantly - increases the value of your MapInfo Professional® knowledge and expertise throughout the organization.

Enterprise deployment made simple
Installing and using MapInfo Discovery is as easy as 1-2-3. Anyone who uses MapInfo Professional® can use MapInfo Discovery. You create the maps as before, in MapInfo Professional®. Then MapInfo Discovery helps you create a neatly organized catalog of your maps and related information. Setting up and maintaining the catalog is as easy as maintaining files on a Microsoft®
Windows® PC. For each map in the catalog, you provide a title, description and category for your map. MapInfo Discovery automatically creates a thumbnail image that makes it easy to browse and search the catalog.

Viewers Have Easy Access
All you do is provide your audience with a link/bookmark (created by MapInfo Discovery) to your map catalog. They can browse the catalog in their web browser and simply click on the map thumbnail or title they want to see. For each published map, users can:

  • Zoom in/out or re-center the map to any location or zoom level
  • Get associated tabular or attribute information on any map object such as a point, a line or a region object like state boundary.

Works in Tandem with MapInfo Professional®
MapInfo Discovery works alongside MapInfo Professional®. A typical department with several MapInfo Professional® users can share a single copy of MapInfo Discovery because it is licensed for the computer where the catalog resides. Each user could have the MapInfo Discovery extension installed and publish their map catalog to a shared server.

Simple Installation Process
MapInfo Discovery™ has three main parts: Discovery server, Discovery publisher and a standard browser for viewing the catalog and maps. Discovery server is the main application that is the engine of Discovery and is responsible for managing the catalog and enabling online map visualization. Discovery server installer is simple and can accommodate range of users. From the MapInfo Professional® users that may not be knowledgeable about databases and web servers to advanced users that want flexibility every step of the way.

The publisher is the utility MapInfo Professional® users need to publish maps to the Discovery server. It is provided in a separate installer that simplifies the process of deploying the publisher on any or as many system running MapInfo Professional® v6.5 or 7.0.

The viewer being a standard web browser is the tool for viewing live interactive maps of MapInfo Discovery™.  Microsoft Operating systems today come standard with this application. If you do not have a web browser please contact your MIS department or consult your windows operating system CD.

Hardware Requirements

Server
The Server can be deployed on any Microsoft Workstation or Server such as Windows NT, 2000 or even Windows XP. The only additional software that is required is IIS. IIS is provided free with Windows 2000 or XP. On Windows NT it can be found on the Option pack CD.

Publisher
Any MapInfo Professional® user in the organization can install the publisher. It provides the ability to publish maps to  the Discovery server. The publisher integrates with, and therefore requires MapInfo Professional® v6.5 or v7.0.

Viewer
The viewer for Discovery is a standard web browser. Internet Explorer v5.5 or higher or Netscape 6.0 or higher can be used for this purpose.

"Customers are finding many powerful ways to use the product so functions and capabilities that may not be apparent can often be exposed via simple steps."
